“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.” ~J.K. Rowling
From an early age, we are taught to avoid mistakes, because they have unpleasant consequences. Only by “playing it safe,” and remaining in our comfort zone, we can be happy, as we were taught.
There is a paradox in one of life’s greatest lessons: one can only succeed by knowing failure. The creative journey of new discoveries and innovations, often comes as a result brought by a minefield of failures. Modern heroes become legendary through small defeats of failures, endurance, and courage–as is every story of human greatness.
Failure is an integral part on the journey to self-realization. Only in failure can we understand our own full potential and passion in life. And it is only when we turn failure into opportunity, opportunity into creativity, and creativity into reality.
“All people dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their mind, wake in the morning to find that it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous people, For they dream their dreams with open eyes, And make them come true.”
~ D.H. Lawrence
The fear of failure tends to overcome the courage to face fears. Comfort, security, and mediocrity is a norm. The question boils down to: what do you plan to do with your one precious life that you have been blessed with? What wild adventure will you dare to take? Every person has a revolution beating inside of their chest. We just have to have the courage and faith to take that first step.
So let this be my journey–to tell the many stories of a face. Be not afraid to walk on water. Be not afraid to use my gifts and talents to create a better humanity.
Lupita Nyong’o said at the Oscar’s Award, as she won for best supporting actress: “No matter where you are from–your dreams are valid.” So let the sail lose, and be free to wander and fight for your dreams and turn them into reality.
